Initial Evaluations

Initial Evaluations- For Children turning 3 years to 5 years of age:

     Do you think your child isn’t progressing as quickly as other children the same age?  Has a pediatrician or teacher recommended your child be evaluated?  Young children learn and develop differently.  If you have concerns, the first step in the evaluation process begins with you, the parent or guardian. Often parents are the first to express concerns, though they may also come from family, friends, your child’s teacher or pediatrician.

Initial Evaluation Services are for children between ages three and five and you have concerns about their development.  Whether you have concerns about your child’s:

  1. Speech (Ex: Articulation, pragmatics, not enough vocabulary for their age);

  2. Behavior (Ex: Non-compliance, transitioning problems, interacting socially appropriate with others, or anxiety);

  3. Play Skills (Ex: playing cooperatively with peers, playing appropriately with play material, initiating play with others)

  4. Fine Motor and/or Gross motor skills(Ex: Cutting, writing letters or drawing shapes, riding tricycles/bicycles, walking up and down stairs, sensory concerns).

     Look at the Childhood Milestone Map for signs that your infant or toddler may need extra help. If you have concerns about your baby's development, the earlier you get help the better. Early help does make a difference!

Which children need early help?

Any child from 3 to 5 years of age, who have a developmental delay, disability, or condition that affects development may need help through CPSE services.

Where can parents get help?

     If your child is 3 to 5 years of age, parents, or legal guardians, must request an evaluation from the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) office at your local school district. When your child is referred to the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE), you will be given a list of agencies in Suffolk County that were approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), including Leeway School, which can provide Preschool Special Education evaluations.

If you choose Leeway School for your child’s evaluations, your district will send a request for the evaluations to us. We will contact you to schedule the evaluations and send you a packet of forms for you to complete.

Psychological Evaluations:

     Comprehensive Psychological Evaluations by Licensed Doctoral Level Psychologists and Certified School Psychologists are provided as part of Interdisciplinary Initial Evaluations for both Early Intervention and Pre School Special Education.  Assessments generally include measures that evaluate a child’s cognitive, adaptive and behavioral functioning.  Diagnostic Evaluations are available when Autism Spectrum Disorders are suspected.

Leeway School is a New York State Education Department approved preschool special education evaluation site.  We offer the services of a multidisciplinary evaluation team for children transitioning from Early Intervention to CPSE, and for children at risk for disabilities or developmental delays between ages 3-5.

Evaluation Procedure:

     Our evaluations, especially for initial referrals (the first time your child is evaluated), must include a developmental history and a psychological evaluation; other evaluations are conducted based on your concerns. The evaluators may also recommend additional evaluations based on their findings. These evaluations may include such areas as speech and language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and education. The results of all evaluations will be discussed with you.  A summary of the evaluations and all evaluation reports are sent to you and your school district’s CPSE in a timely manner.  If you have any questions about the evaluation reports that you received, please feel free to contact the evaluator.  The evaluator will be more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

     Once the CPSE receives the evaluations, they will schedule a meeting and notify you and Leeway School of the CPSE meeting date and time.   A representative from Leeway School will attend the meeting to present the evaluations to the CPSE committee.

     For more information regarding preschool special education, contact either Leeway School or your local school district Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE).
